I will go before you and make the crooked places straight; I will break in pieces the gates of bronze and cut the bars of iron. I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden riches of secret places, that you may know that I, the Lord, who call you by your name, am the God of Israel.
Isaiah 45:2-3, NKJV
Growing up I would go with my grandparents to visit my great grandparents in the backwoods of Missouri. To this day I can remember the up and down hilly roads that were winding and twisting through the seemingly endless forest of trees. One wrong move and someone could be off the side of the road and down the embankment quickly. As a child I had so much fun going on those winding and hilly roads because I would get the roller coaster feeling in the bottom of my stomach. Somehow I don’t think my grandparents got as much enjoyment from the ride.
Life can be full of winding, twisting, hilly roads of uncertainty, confusion, and danger. Maybe you have felt the nearness of the danger that lurks around the next corner of life. Maybe you have experienced confusion and uncertainty along the journey.
Isaiah prophesies here about the majestic character and ability of our God to not only handle, but overcome any obstacle we face. He truly is the Way-Maker in our lives. Blessed is the man or woman whom God goes before. He promises to not only handle the crooked places; He promises to go before us and guide us through whatever life may bring along our journey. As we face those uncertain times, He makes confusion cease to clarity; He makes turmoil cease to peace; He make obstacles breakforth into opportunities.
Through every circumstance, we can have childlike faith, trusting that God is not only at the wheel of our lives, He is the author and the finisher of our lives. Not only has God gone before us, but He directs every circumstance we face. Crooked places and obstacles are assured, but so is the sovereign hand of God’s providence through them all.
Behind every crooked place and every obstacle are secret riches. The riches of which God speaks may include blessings in this life, but greater than these are the riches of knowing the Lord who is calling your name. In the darkness and uncertainty, His voice brings clarity and peace. His voice stills the troubled waters. His voice instructs in the way that we should go. His voice speaks life and light to the darkness. Jesus said that His sheep know His voice. How blessed we are to know Him more intimately during the uncertainties of life.
Next time you are facing twisting, winding, hilly roads of confusion and uncertainty or obstacles that seem to be blocking your progress, have assurance that your God who has gone before you is revealing Himself mighty and strong on your behalf. He is the Way Maker for you!
